Meet the author
Jhoanna Lynn B. Cruz: Women Loving Women
Join us for an afternoon of poetry reading and discussion.

Jhoanna Lynn B. Cruz teaches linguistics, in the Department of Humanities of the University of the Philippines Mindanao. She completed her Master of Arts in Language and Literature and Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, both with high distinction, at De La Salle University. She currently makes her home in Davao City with her two children. Jhoanna is in Australia for a limited time to attend the Asia Pacific Writers Conference in December 2011 in Perth and to do a few poetry readings in Sydney and Melbourne. An afternoon of concert highlights 2pm – 5pm at The Women’s Library,
Brown Street Newtown. Creative Womyn Down Under together with The Women’s Library invite anyone who attended the Lesbians in the House concert and those who missed out to join us for a delicious afternoon tea where we will show the “Sappho to Ellen” slideshow, the “In Memory” DVD, and other photographic and video highlights. There will also be live music, and an opportunity to meet up with friends and share your favourite stories from the Lesbian Weekender. Entry by donation at the door towards The Women’s Library. |

The Women's Library AGM and TWL Women's Awards 2011

Following the AGM we will be announcing the 2011 winners of the library awards. Many women serve our community with passion and dedication, and are largely unrecognised. The TWL Women’s Awards acknowledge women who give time, energy and commitment to promoting women’s communities and supporting their sisters. Please take the time to think about a women you know who fills the following criteria:
- Women who have given their time and energy to promoting
Lesbian issues and support for lesbians.
- Women who have given their time and energy to the promotion and
support of TWL.
LESBIAN WEEKENDER SYDNEY 8 – 10 JULY 2011
Lesbians in the House Concert, Sydney Opera House Bush Dance, Marrickville and a Day in Newtown. The Lesbian Weekender Sydney was Produced by Creative Womyn Down Under “Connecting Womyn & Creative Expression” . Georgina Abrahams and Gabe Journey Jones thank everyone who contributed to this special weekend. Weekender Photographers were: Tracey Beckler and Dani Lane.
Lesbian Bush Dance
On Friday the 8th July over 100 women kicked up their heels at a fun night with KD Twang, Lesbian Bush band led by Ruth Shepherd and guest country singer/whip cracker Kerrin Dow. Prizes for Dancing and Best Dressed were highly sort after. Raffle supporters included: Digital Camera Warehouse & King Street Newtown businesses Bloodwood Restaurant, Holy Sheet, Better Read Than Dead, Gelatomassi, The Women’s Library and Eastern Flair
Day In Newtown
On Saturday 9th July women gathered in Newtown for a packed day of entertainment and fun.
- Lesbian Artisans Market & Stalls included Fiona Davidson, Jack Draper, Marg McHugh, Denise Walker, Sonia Zutt LOTL, Fostering Young Lives, One-in-Ten, Sound Therapy Rainbow Warehouse,Self Defence Now, Chai & Cakes and more!
- Self Defence, Same Sex Salsa & Martial Arts demonstrations by Newtown Martial Arts.
- Lesbians in the Hall Poets: Hosted Jenni Nixon included: Beatriz Copello, Keztril, Tricia Dearborn, Gabe Journey Jenni Nixon and Ray Tyndale followed by Open Mic.
- Lesbian Walking Tour of Newtown. The tour included Twenty10, Flying Penguin and other lesbian owned/friendly places concluding with a BBQ Lunch at The Women’s Library.
- Short Films by Girls’ Own Pictures and Launch of feature film project “The Trouble with E”
- Lesbians in the Hall Musos: The host was Sin, and included: Westgate Lounge, Sue Gee, Kerrin Dow, Pilot Darcy, Sally Hackett Colleen Fricker, Su Blu and Aimee Francis followed by Open Mic.
- Lesbian Discussion Forum: Facilitator Katrina Fox included: Gail Hewison, Siri May, Steph Sands, Gabe Journey Corrina Liao, Holly Bennett and Mardi James
- Kids Corner: Face Painting with Maureen Nash Art/Craft all day; 4pm Story Telling with Sara Johnston
Lesbian Movie Night Saturday 9 July 7.30–10pm at The Women’s Library
The Women’s Library presented a great lesbian movie in feminist company. Over 50 women gathered, and ‘Better Than Chocolate', was seen in the library’s version of surround sound.
Lesbians in the House Concert Sunday 10 July Sydney Opera House
2000 lesbians gathered at the Sydney Opera House 20 years ago for an unforgettable night of great music & dance. On 10 July 2011 from 7 to 11pm lesbians were be back in the House with many of the original artists plus a whole lot more! The 1991 performers Judy Small, Deborah Cheetham, Anique, Kath & Ini and Jive with Jeanette dancers were joined by Bluehouse, Julie McCrossin, Shauna Jensen, Kerrianne Cox, Mignon Lee-Warden, Donna-Maree Dunlop, Sally Whitwell, Maeve Marsden, Cath Golden, Toni Lalich & Pia Cameron.
This unmissable celebration began when the Opera Theatre Foyer opened at 6pm with a photographic exhibition by Diann Payne, a drumming welcome by Tranceportation and Feral Fingers and ACON’s This is Oz social justice photo campaign. The concert included surprises, a community choir, an honouring of lesbians who have died during the last 20 years and a young singers showcase that featured: Bo Banta, Gabby Dever, Hannah Matysek and Genevieve Chadwick.
The concert was Auslan interpreted, with some of the interpreters having been at the concert 20 years ago.

Meet the author: Kerryn Higgs
Our first author was Kerryn Higgs aka Elizabeth Reily. It was a great afternoon and a wonderful opportunity to discuss so many aspects of the writing process. Many thanks to Kerryn for her time and willingness to open up about something which can be a very personal experience.
Meet the author: Brigid Delaney
Our second author was Brigid Delaney, who spoke about her book ‘The Restless Life’. We had some interesting reading from Brigid’s book, including a very amusing vignette of speed dating—and, as usual, a stimulating discussion and excellent afternoon tea!
Meet the author: Jean Taylor
Our third author was Jean Taylor, author of Brazen Hussies, a herstory of radical feminist activism in Victoria from 1970-1979. Discussion from Brazen Hussies ( not us...) was lead by Jean.Winter Solstice Book Sale

2008
Spring Fling
- The big event for 2008 was the Spring Fling in September. This was a celebration of the library being at the Newtown location for 10 years. The event was attended by over 90 women, and included:
- Historical display
- Launch of the TWL Herstory book
- Launch of the Storying Our Lives Book
- Performers such as Chorus of Women, Jakelene Xtreme, Maxine Kauter, Jenni Nixon and the Jam Tartz, and Chris Carriage [who spoke about the history of aboriginal women in Australia. She placed it in the context of the generations of women in her family, and the different government policies that impacted on them.
- The Inaugural TWL Women’s Awards were also announced at the Spring Fling.. There are so many wonderful and amazing women who are out there quietly doing their thing to support women and the women’s community. It is hoped that this will become an annual event. The winners this year were Glenniffer Roberts, Jeannie Sotheran and Vicki Harding.
